Hill Visits Reap Good Outcomes for REALTORS®

This month, we REALTORS® will be in Washington, D.C., to represent our counties and states by speaking to our elected representatives. Historically, the impact of our Hill visits has been to change votes to favor the "REALTOR® Party." As REALTORS® meet with members of Congress, they can advocate for important policy issues, including protecting personal property rights for our clients. Here are just a few of the important legislative issues we must address with our elected leaders.

Expand Affordable Property Insurance: Urge Congress to adopt a more forward-looking national policy that improves availability of affordable property insurance, including long-term reauthorization of the National Flood Insurance Program.

Commercial Mortgage Market Liquidity:
Congress should pass H.R. 3380/S. 2919 to increase the cap on credit union commercial lending, urge the Federal Reserve and Treasury to encourage banks to provide term extensions for performing properties and hold additional hearings on the state of commercial real estate markets.

FHA Reform and FHA Loan Limits:
Now more than ever, the FHA has proven the key role that it plays in the nation's housing markets. Congress should pass legislation to strengthen FHA while still allowing it to provide access to safe, affordable financing for responsible borrowers, who are underserved by the private market. Congress should also make permanent the existing higher FHA loan limit formula and loan limit cap.

GSE Reform and GSE Loan Limits: Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac have helped to ensure a continual flow of capital to the mortgage market in all markets and in all economic conditions. Moving forward, the federal government must have a continued key role in the secondary mortgage market to ensure that there is capital for mortgage lending throughout all mortgage markets and in all market conditions. Congress should also make permanent the existing higher loan limit formula and loan limit cap.

One of the most important things you can do as a REALTOR® is donate to RPAC. These funds are used each year to promote positive bills being passed and negative bills being defeated to maintain our ability to conduct business and protect property rights for our clients. For the latest on political issues facing the "REALTOR® Party," including talking points and NAR's "Washington Report," visit realtor.org.

Also, please check out the Outreach & Influence Strategic Forum at
Women's Council's Midyear Meeting on Friday, May 14, where you will have a first-hand opportunity to learn from Women’s Council members about the importance and benefits of supporting RPAC.

I would like to see a session where different Realtors/Affiliates are given 10 minutes to present an idea that will help with community relations, Realtor programs, Resourse Membership Meetings or Fund Raising. This presentation will be limited to 10 min with 5 min change over, can be a slide show or handouts. This will give everyone information to take home and show how the idea is put together.

Hill Visits Reap Good Outcomes
Thanks for bringing more attention to RPAC to our members. Educating the REALTORS on the importance of political participation starts with information. The Hill visit when we are in D.C. is one of those opportunities to educate. With legislation coming at us from all directions, it is so important to our industry to participate in RPAC.

RPAC
We still have REALTORS® across our Nation that just don''t get it. They don''t understand the importance of RPAC and how it serves us as well as the issues we face. We all must take on the responsibility to keep getting the message out one REALTOR® at a time. Great article Bobbie, thanks much.

Hill Visits Reap Good Outcomes for REALTORS®
Thanks for addressing some of NAR "talking points." Hopefully, our members will do the hill visits. What an experience to attend the sessions with our state representatives and/or state senators to discuss issues of concerns of Realtors. The "Realtor Party" in action! Look forward to seeing all of you in the WCR Outreach & Influence Forum so you can learn about the opportunities you are missing.
