Want SEO for Your Real Estate Web Site? It's Time to Get Creative

By Dustin Luther

Coming up with an interesting way to start an article on SEO is not easy. SEO, or search engine optimization, is an analytical and often "dry" subject. Generating real benefits from an SEO campaign can take months, if not years. If you're looking for a short-term kick for your business, then you really should be looking toward other marketing avenues because good SEO isn't quick or easy.

With that huge caveat, SEO is all the rage today because the few REALTORS® who "get it" in any given market are often able to dominate local real estate results in the search engines. And there's a lot of business being generated by those who know how to convert.

But first, the basics. What is SEO? SEO is the process of improving the quality and/or quantity of organic traffic to your Web site from search engines.

It's important to note that we're not talking about "paid" traffic. If you want to learn more about improving the quality or quantity of paid traffic to your site, then look into the art of search engine marketing (SEM). The focus of SEO is on free, or organic, traffic.

Within SEO, there are really three areas on which you can focus to improve your rankings:

  1. Improve content on your Web site (on-site SEO)
  2. Improve user engagement on your site
  3. Improve how other sites engage with your site (off-site SEO)
