When you hear "WordPress," you may think "blog." And it is true that WordPress is one of the most popular blogging programs around. What you might not know is that you can use WordPress not only for your blog, but also your own custom Web site, and the end result will have you looking like a pro.
If you're new to WordPress, let's go over a few basics.
Cost. WordPress is free downloadable blog software and provides community mailing lists, community support forums, documentation, free themes and plugins.
Themes. A WordPress theme is like a template; it can provide you with complete control over the look and feel of the material on your Web site.
Plugins. A plugin is a tool to extend the functionality of your WordPress site, providing custom features to design your site to your specific needs.
WordPress.com or WordPress.org
In thinking about using Wordpress for your Web site, you'll have to decide between the .com version or the .org version. They are very similar, but with some differences that you'll want to take into consideration.
WordPress.com
- Easy to set up—elements such as upgrades, backups and security features are built-in and done for you.
- Hosted on the WordPress servers—low probability of outages.
- Secure (SSL) login—less chance of anyone getting into your account.
- Your posts and pages are automatically backed up.
- Cannot upload plugins or a custom theme.
- A better option if you're going to do the site yourself and have limited design knowledge or experience.
WordPress.org
- Hosted on the server of your choice (I recommend Bluehost.com for about $7/month).
- Full control over your site, including customizing the CSS code if needed.
- Ability to load custom themes and hundreds of plugin choices to suit your needs.
- The recommended option if you're having your virtual assistant design and manage your site.
