Education Session Take-aways

Following are some "take-aways" from recent education sessions at the National Conference.

Juanita McDowell emphasized the importance of a professional business card because it is often the first piece of marketing that a potential client will receive from your company. During her session, Juanita identified three things that savvy REALTORS® should include on their business cards:

  • A Photo and Tagline. The tagline should provide a concise description of your focus areas and a friendly photo. Remember you’re in the people business, so a picture is a must.
  • A Valuable Backside. Avoid cramming everything on the front of the card. Use the back for a testimonial, tip schedule or a special website that directs the consumer to a page of hot listings or a YouTube channel with home tours and/or educational tidbits.
  • A Call to Action. It's one thing to provide your contact information – better still to encourage new acquaintances to give you theirs. Consider writing a useful article or white paper that your buyer needs (i.e. "10 Common Mistakes in Homebuying"). Require an "action" to receive it (email me or visit a web page to submit contact information). Now you’re off and running to build a permission-based list of potential homebuyers. 

Denise Lones shared secrets to help agents get over the frustration and fear of lead generation:

  1. She discussed how to find your own custom lead generation fit, tapping into the resources that you already bring to the table: your background and interests, your market (including people and properties), your geography, your budget and how likely you are to be consistent with generating leads.
  2. She shared how two agents in the same office can have success with two entirely different lead generation methods.
  3. Denise also discussed how to break up a lead generation method into one-time and ongoing tasks and how keeping it simple is the surest method to triumph.

"reCharge Your Open Houses"
There is a great debate on whether open houses are an effective use of our time in real estate. This program showcased that they absolutely are. Karlton Utter shared several ideas and approaches to generate more exposure, dialogue for building a relationship and the three power questions you must ask every visitor: 

  • What was it about this home that caught your attention?
  • Do you have a home to sell?
  • Do you want to buy this home?

"Simple Video For REALTORS®"
Go to YouTube right now and search for "real estate" and your city name. What you will find is the good, the bad and the ugly. The reality is that no matter what you see there, the videos are getting views. This program reviewed several simple videos that sales professionals can use to market themselves and build relationships with current and potential clients, all of which can be done on a smartphone or tablet in less than 5 minutes. The three videos that Karlton Utter recommends trying first are:
