Women’s Council - The Network of Real Estate Stars – One Member’s Journey
The Women’s Council of REALTORS® is a very unique organization within the National Association of REALTORS® family. It is the 12th largest U.S. women’s professional organization with over 11,000 members. Women’s Council provides its members with great educational opportunities on a local, state and national level as well as a distinctive mentoring program that is one-of-a-kind in the industry. Women’s Council members don’t compete with one another. They mentor, train, and support each other with an honest, caring, consistent attitude that adds so much value to the membership.
I have been a member of Women’s Council for over 20 years and I am proud to say that I personally know so many great REALTORS® who have served on the NAR leadership team, due to my involvement with the Council; Sherri Meadows, Joann Poole, Gail Hartnett, Becky Hill, Ann DeFries, and so many others who have been involved for so many years. These, along with many other Council members are great resources for referral business. I know I can find an agent in any state to help my clients, thanks to my relationships in Women’s Council. I’ve also received many referrals for buyers here on Long Island through this great network of members. I’m happy to be the Long Island/New York contact for so many Council friends around the country.
So how can YOU begin? Let me share my story. It began in the late 1990’s – the Long Island Chapter (now Network) always ran great educational meetings. The first one I attended was a ‘Round Table Discussion’ featuring 5-6 local agents (all top producers in my market) that were sharing different tips and ideas for getting listings, working with buyers, objection handling etc. I thought, “I have to see this one. Those agents will never share all their money-making, listing-getting, deal-closing tips with the rest of us. They aren’t going to help the competition!” But guess what? They did. I got so much information and so many ideas from that first session, that I signed up to join Women’s Council immediately. I have been an active member ever since. Always learning and always mentoring new members with their business and leadership possibilities.
Now – I hope the idea of Leadership Possibilities didn’t scare anyone off! While being a committee chairperson, member of the Board of Directors, Officer or even President isn’t for everyone, it’s nice to know that the opportunity is there. As a member, you will learn how to be a leader in your Network, and also in your business.
The other greatest benefit I have received from my years in the Women’s Council was the coaching and mentoring of my great friend, Joeann Fossland (AZ). When I started attending national Meetings, Joeann was the chairperson for our print magazine, Communique. Through her guidance and encouragement, I began writing articles not only for the Council but for other NAR publications as well. And her mentoring encouraged me to take it to the next level and do some educational speaking at National Events and to eventually get my License here in NY to be a Real Estate Instructor. I enjoy sharing all of my experience and knowledge to help new agents here on Long Island start their real estate careers and the Women’s Council was definitely my starting point!
So, whether you’re new to real estate or a seasoned professional looking to take your business to the next level, the continued and consistent value of the organization, its tools and members that mentor and help each other cannot be duplicated anywhere in the industry. And if you’re already a member of Women’s Council, let this be a reminder that our membership holds so much value. Re-ignite yourself, take the next step in your membership, find new value in the Council for 2018 and if you need help along the way, be sure to ask. We have so many wonderful mentors in the Council with an abundance of knowledge of the organization and running a successful real estate business. Our willingness to share is what sets us apart! Let’s make 2018 our year of growth!
