Last week, we are sure your email inboxes were bombarded with messages about GDPR, or General Data Protection Regulation. Effective May 25, 2018, GDPR is a new set of rules designed to give citizens of the European Union (EU), more control over their personal data. What does this mean to you as a REALTOR®? Although the new rule governs how all websites and businesses treat the data belonging to EU residents, the rule applies to organizations across the world, regardless of whether they do business outside the United States. The fines for not complying are quite significant and translate to US $23 million or 4 percent of a company’s annual global income. NAR has some good resources on what REALTORS® need to know about these regulations, which can be visited via this link.
We also wanted to take this opportunity to remind you that the "find a member" feature on wcr.org is an open system, designed for colleagues to easily find you and get in touch to do referrals and to connect. This also increases the likelihood of phishing scams, where someone may scrape member data and contact you purporting to be from the national headquarters office, but you can quickly decipher if the emails are legitimate or not and re-reading this article will outline telltale signs of phishing scams.
At the Council, we value your membership and want to ensure that your personal data is safe and of paramount importance to us. Additionally, we are constantly evaluating our privacy policies and mirroring NAR's to ensure that we are continually respectful of your privacy.
