Shape Your Future:
The 2020 Census

by JoAnne Poole, PMN

The 2020 Census is creating partnerships to help us get everyone counted in the right place at the right time. The Census view REALTORS® as trusted voices in our communities.

Every ten years, the United States Government conducts a Census and many people ask, why? Well, the purpose is to make sure everyone in every household gets counted so each state and community get their fair share of allocations both in federal funding and congressional seats.

Each year, nearly $675 billion dollars in federal funding is allocated across the country based on the Census count. The number of seats in Congress to represent your community is based on the number of people counted in your community. Redistricting counts are sent to the states by March 31, 2021. It also provides infrastructure for resident needs including residential/commercial development, new roads, schools, and emergency services. For those of us who enjoy looking for new outfits, the Census also determines where to open new places to shop.

How will it be done? By mobilizing everyone. Nationwide, every state, every county, every city, and every address will be asked to participate electronically and approximately 350,000 Census takers canvassing neighborhoods to those who do not respond to the electronic request.

As Women's Council members, you are already well-connected leaders in your community. Your support and participation are valuable as this will be impacting your business and the communities you serve.

We can make a difference. It’s a big job, but we can help make it easier by spreading the word about the purpose and importance of the Census. On or about March 12, 2020, households will receive an invitation to respond to the 2020 Census. Every household will have the option of responding online, by mail or by phone prior to a Census taker knocking on someone’s door.
