You most certainly don't want to miss this event! Karen Pershing, Executive Director with Metro Drug Coalition will be here to give us all an update on the drug crisis and how the non-profit Metro Drug Coalition is helping in this fight.

As we all know this crisis is right in our own backyard and directly effects our business and our clients. Find out what is being done and how you can also help combat this horrible epidemic.

Karen Pershing provides organizational oversight and helps guide MDC’s mission. A 30 plus year veteran of public health, she has devoted her career to improving the health of families in Knoxville. Karen works with local and state policymakers to advocate for laws that help prevent substance abuse and its consequences.

Karen is passionate about prescription drug abuse prevention, specifically targeting Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS) and increasing access to treatment for pregnant women. In 2012, she was chosen as one of only four community leaders to serve on a statewide planning group to develop a five-year prevention plan for Tennessee. Karen is a graduate of Women’s Addiction Services Leadership Institute Class of 2013. Tennessee Department of Health recognition for work in prescription drug abuse prevention, member of the Tennessee Public Health Assocation, Executive Women's Association, and UT CHancellor's Associates program. SHe is a Certifiied Prevention Specialist II and a 2014 graduate of the UT Consortium for Social ENterprise Effectiveness. Karen was the 2016 recipient of the Partners and Leadership Award from the Tennessee Public Health Association as well the receipient of the 2017 FBI Community Director's Leadership Award representing the Knoxville Field Office and a 2018 recipient of the Knox Biz (formerly Knoxville Business Journal) Healthcare Heroes Award for her work in addictin and recovery.

The Knox County Prescription Drug Task Force that was formed under her leadership has been recognized as a model coalition by the Tennessee Department’s of Health and Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services.

She received her Bachelor of Science in Human Development and Family Studies and a Master of Science in Public Health from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.

Metro Drug Coaliation (MDC) is a nonprofit organization established 31 years ago by a joint resolution of City of Knoxville and Knox County to unite policy makers and leaders to address community substance abuse issues.

It's mission is to improve the health of the greater Knoxville community by reducing the use of alcohol and drugs througj policy, systems andn environment change.
