What Successful Women Entrepreneurs Know That Most People Don’t
Why Your ‘Life Experience’ is the Best ROI You’ll Ever See
by Wendy Forsythe, Chief Marketing Officer of eXp Realty
There’s a story playing on repeat in the minds of too many talented women in real estate. It goes something like this: I’m too old. I don’t have the right background. I didn’t go to the right school.
That story is a lie. And the data proves it.
I’ve spent a lot of time studying women who built extraordinary businesses. Not the polished retrospective versions of their stories, but the messy, real, who-told-you-that-you-could-do-this early chapters. What I found might surprise you. The assumptions that hold most women back have almost nothing to do with what actually drives success.
Here are three lessons I want every woman in real estate to carry with her.
Lesson One: You Are Not Too Old
Anne Boden spent decades working in banking. When she brought a bold new idea to the industry, the feedback she received wasn’t encouragement — it was a suggestion that she retire. So she did the opposite. At 54, she launched Starling Bank, a digital bank that became worth over a billion dollars.
Fifty-four.
We live in a culture obsessed with “young founders” and “30 under 30” lists. That narrative has done real damage to women who assume their best years are behind them. They’re not. More women are reaching their highest levels of professional success in their 40s, 50s, and 60s than ever before. You don’t have a deadline on success. You have a runway.
Your experience isn’t baggage. It’s leverage. The relationships you’ve built, the failures you’ve survived, the wisdom you’ve earned — none of that expires. It compounds.
Lesson Two: You Don’t Have to Have All the Answers
Here’s something that should genuinely shift how you think about your next move: a recent study of 200 female founders who built billion-dollar companies from scratch found that 53% of them came from completely unrelated fields before launching their companies.
More than half.
They didn’t have a head start. They didn’t have insider knowledge. They had curiosity, resilience, and a willingness to figure it out as they went. That’s it.
As women, we often wait until we feel “ready.” Until we have more experience, more credentials, more certainty. But readiness is a moving target. The women who build something significant don’t wait until all the conditions are perfect. They start, they stumble, they adjust, and they keep going.
Don’t underestimate your ability to pivot. Don’t underestimate your ability to figure it out. The learning curve is real and you are more than capable of climbing it.
Lesson Three: Elite Education Isn’t the Entry Ticket
Kat Cole dropped out of college. She went on to become CEO of Focus Brands and later AGI, building brands and businesses that most executives only dream of leading.
In entrepreneurship, the biggest exits and the most impactful businesses rarely trace back to the most prestigious degrees. What they trace back to is a relentless focus on the customer — on listening, adapting, and using real-world feedback as a competitive edge.
The best education available to a real estate entrepreneur isn’t on a campus. It’s in every client conversation, every transaction that went sideways, every market shift you navigated. The women who win treat every experience as data. They stay curious. They stay coachable. And they use what they learn faster than anyone else.
Ask Yourself: “Why Not Me?”
If there’s a thread connecting all three of these lessons, it’s this: the rules you’ve been given about who gets to build something great weren’t written for us. But the future is being built by us. Your decades of experience aren’t just ‘background,’ they are the blueprint. Don’t just ask ‘Why not me?’ Act as if the chair was already waiting for you. Because when you realize the table wasn’t built for you, you stop asking for a seat and start building a better room.
You are not too old. You are not too inexperienced. You are not under-qualified.
You are exactly where you need to be.
